Improvisation                                    notebk2.gif (1828 bytes)

Improvisation is Spontaneous Composing.

Take Note:

  1. Anyone can improvise!  It is a matter of developing a good MUSICAL IMAGINATION.

  2. Try painting a Musical picture, or telling a Musical story.

  3. No fear about making a mistake! You are the Composer, so if something sound a bit funny, don't worry, you can pretend you meant it to sound like that!

  4. If a note of your melody sounds out of place, try moving BY STEP to another note, while keeping the flow of the music going.

  5. Create Musical Ideas:

The skill of Improvising is the ability to REMEMBER your ideas.

    REPEAT your good ideas

    Don't repeat your bad ideas!

    Work in musical PHRASES.

The following pages will provide some improvisation practice.
