The Eaton Diary of London 2001
As
we are getting more settled and adventurous, we are enjoying more of London from
above ground rather than just Underground.
Monument
was a Tube station that meant nothing until we ventured into daylight and
climbed the 311 steps of the spiral stairway up to the top of the Monument. It
was built to commemorate the Great Fire of London in the 1666. The great column
stands 61 metres tall, which is the distance of the Monument from the Baker's
shop where the fire started. The view of
the Tower Bridge made it worth the exercise.
